A TIMELESS MESSAGE FROM A WAR HERO
Sinhgarh Company, Indian Military Academy | 23 Jan 1975
In a powerful gesture of remembrance and Regt pride, Col S J Singh (Retd) has gifted a treasured letter to the GRENADIERS Regt — a personal message written by then Major Hoshiar Singh, PVC , while attending an official function in Delhi on 23rd January 1975 . This letter, addressed to the cadets of Sinhgarh Company at the Indian Military Academy, was originally entrusted to Senior under Officer (SUO) SJ Singh , to be read aloud to the company.
We are deeply grateful to Colonel SJ Singh for preserving this rare piece of Regt history and sharing it with the GRENADIERS Fraternity. It is not merely a letter — it is a window into the values, emotions and leadership of one of our finest Officers.
From the elegant setting of Haryana Bhavan , Major Hoshiar Singh wrote:
"My Dear,
‘ Sg Coy boys ’ only to beread to Sg Coy.I am writing this to convey to you boys my internal feelings. Feelings are
Gold Iron Mud
Answer me when I came from this luxurious life of Haryana Bhavan, where beauty, luxury and misery are available.
SUO SJ Singh – read the whole extract."
This short yet poignant note captures the profound connection between an Instructor and his cadets - a bond forged not just in uniform, but in spirit. Even while surrounded by the comforts of Delhi, Major Hoshiar Singh’s heart remained with his cadets —a reflection of his integrity, humility and deep sense of duty. His cryptic yet emotionally charged words—"Feelings are Gold Iron Mud" - evokes the journey of a soldier: honour, resilience, and sacrifice.
Now part of the GRENADIERS Regt heritage, this letter will continue to inspire generations of soldiers and officers, reminding us of the timeless values of leadership, emotional strength, and unwavering commitment to our duties.
